Single Origin Coffee Beans
Single Origin Coffee means that the coffee comes from one particular region or province within that country. Since some countries are quite large, the coffees can vary in flavour depending on which part of the country they come from. Brazil, for instance, has 26 states and is actually BIGGER in geographical size than Australia. Single-origin coffee usually defines that come from one area, even one farm, or even one particular harvest but more often these days a blanket “Single-Origin” tag isn’t accurate enough so you might see words like “Microlot or Nanolot” which means the coffee is from one farm or lot within a farm. So, although you may think you are drinking one type of Brazilian coffee bean, you could in fact be drinking a blend of Brazilian coffee beans unless it states on the label that it is indeed from a single farm.
Single-origin coffees are for people who want to explore the intricacies of coffee. Similar to wine, different varieties of the coffee cherry, along with different climates, harvests, processing methods and even terroir, produce certain flavours. The flavours can be quite unique to a particular landscape or variety of coffee which is why aficionados enjoy searching for particular nuances.
Our single-origin coffees are sourced for their flavour, longevity, stability and body, so we often get to sample new harvests and decide which origins are best to use in coffee blends and which are best to sell separately.
However, the downside to sourcing Single-origin coffees is that they are not always widely available which is why you might see below that there are many out of stock single origins.
Unlike a blend that can be available all year round, a Single Origin coffee may only be here for a month or two before we’ve depleted the farm's harvest and we have to wait until the next harvest (1-2 times a year).
