Africa was the birthplace of coffee. And like the continent itself, the coffee produced there is rich in colour, flavour and diversity. Tasting notes vary from the clean, wine-like and floral Kenyan varietals to a rich, chocolatey and earthy flavour out of Yemen, and deep, dark fruit notes of the Ethiopia region. A truly great place to start in the world of specialty coffee, especially considering it’s rich history with the plant.
When winemakers wax poetic about the places that turned them on to grapes, they often cite regions in France. However, when it comes to coffee, Europe has no grasp on African coffee with its tantalising flavours and thousands of varieties. In fact, only a few people even realise that Africa was the birthplace of coffee and they’ve been perfecting it for over 1500 years!
