How Do I Make Good Coffee While I’m Camping?

Often times, people tend to sacrifice coffee quality – or even coffee altogether – when they go on a camping trip. But that doesn’t have to be the case! There are plenty of coffee brewing methods that can be done successfully whilst camping, and all you’ll need is hot water. 



Using a plunger (also known as a french press in some countries) is fairly straight forward and easy to do. For a full rundown on how to use one, check out our YouTube video explaining it all.

In short, to brew a delicious batch of plunger coffee you’ll put in your ground coffee, add enough hot water to just cover the grinds, and gently mix them in so they’re all evenly distributed. You can then pour the rest of the water in and place the lid on without pressing the plunger down. Leave this for around six to eight minutes before slowly pressing the plunger down to trap all the coffee grinds at the bottom. It’s recommended to serve immediately to avoid over-extraction.


The Nanopresso is an excellent way to get cafe-quality espresso wherever you are, but it’s a little bit trickier to master than the plunger.


You’ll want to put one level scoop of ground coffee into the coffee basket, and use the flat side of the scoop as a tamp to flatten to grinds into the basket. Fill the other cup with hot water, and screw both ends back onto their respective sides of the Nanopresso’s body. From here, you should slightly twist the knob on the front to release the pump. Turn the Nanopresso upside down (the end with the coffee grinds in it should be at the bottom) and pump the water through the grinds into a cup for a beautiful espresso shot.

While these are the methods we recommend most for high-quality coffee while you’re camping, you can also use a filter or Aeropress if they’re your preferred brewing methods. And remember, just because you’re camping doesn’t mean you have to settle for sub-par coffee.
