Tanzania is located on the eastern coast of Africa with the Indian ocean to its right and virtually engulfing Rwanda and Burundi to its left. Tanzania has been growing coffee since the 16th Century but it was only allowed to be grown by the Haya tribe in the northwest of the country. Originally the Haya tribe didn’t actually drink the coffee but instead boiled it and created a tea-like drink infused with herbs and spices.
The Tanzania wilderness is so rich and diverse with rich volcanic soil including Mt Kilimanjaro, the tallest single standing mountain in the world and some of the most expensive coffees grow on the side of the dormant Volcano. However, this particular coffee is grown at 1700masl in the southern highlands of Songwe region on Elton Farm which is centuries old and possibly one of the oldest surviving colonial farms in Southern Tanzania.
The Elton Farm is owned by a Dutch farmer Eric Smeets and the coffee produced is two 100% organic varieties, Kent and Bourbon, which offer a high-quality bean and present exquisite flavours in the cup.
